I've been inspired by my paternal grandmother in coming up with this poem while she’s in bed due to old age sickness but later on felt that I have to give credit to my other grandparents too. This is my amateurish poetic attempt.

The Way You Are To Me

(For my grandparents-10/10/2006)

With dedication and compassion that springs from within

You took good care of all your off springs.

Nurtured them delicately and patiently

Creating a person which entails their own individuality

Reflecting in their personality your very own identity.

You formulated and guided life

This in future will steer us as we soar through the course of our lives

Thus, parents that we can be forever proud

Bearing in them the values which only you can provide

Which we regard as a feather to your cap.

We’re able to survive all the burdens and battles that we had and have to fight

As we traverse the roads of our lives

And it’s because you’ve passed unto us

Your virtues and somehow emulate your might

Making it worthwhile for us to continue our flight.

You boasted on our laurels with face aglow

Beaming with pride that’s so obvious for everyone to know

And heed in us perfection that other deem as our flaws

Hence, it helps to developed our self-esteem

For us to stand on our ground and grow.

You took notice and told us when you perceived our shortcomings

Without the intent of insulting and hurting our feelings

But only with the sole purpose of self correcting

For us to create a better self

That will lead us to a brighter future ahead.

You face life’s challenges and struggles with strong demeanour

With determination and candour

You endure through your illness with dignity and valour

Still with pride always strongly on your side

You persevere to survive up to the last breathe you can abide

We’re eternally grateful for the principles that you impart

Making an individual that is uniquely us

And with deep gratitude that comes from my heart

Thank you for instilling in us the courage to survive

Making us a better person despite the odds.

Your legacy will forever resides in our hearts

Glad for all the memories we can forever cherish throughout our lives

That even if you leave us to be with God for your eternal rest

And though we sigh of sorrows and tears

You will be remembered always with fondest memories.
